ABOUT THE CONVENING

BRINGING THEM TOGETHER

The biennial Surge Alumni Convening will serve as a national gathering for nearly 500 graduates of Surge’s Fellowship programs across flagship and academy sites, as well as staff, board members, Surge Faculty, and Friends of Surge.

Community

The Convening brings together hundreds of Surge alumni and education leaders of color from across the country into a shared space designed for connection, trust, and authenticity, where they can fully show up and build lasting relationships rooted in shared lived experience.

Learning

Through the Convening’s workshops, keynotes, and collaborative learning experiences, alumni exchange ideas, sharpen their leadership, and continue fueling a movement for educational justice.

Renewal

The Convening intentionally invests in leader sustainability by providing structured wellness experiences— such as play stations, healing spaces, and restorative sessions—so alumni can rest, reflect, and return to their work energized and supported.

Celebration

Through awards, alumni venture spotlights, and culturally relevant entertainment, the Convening elevates alumni excellence, honors community impact, and creates moments of collective joy that reinforce commitment to the movement.

The Proof is in the Impact

The alumni convening was designed to further ignite and inspire the genius we have yet to birth by affirming the genius we already manifest. It is clear by the quality of experience that Surge both believes in our collective genius while simultaneously holding our history and humanity. I am better just by being in this space. The icing on the cake is that my daughter who was traveling with me gets to see me surrounded by excellent Black and Brown leaders whose legacy is pointed toward creating pathways for the emerging brilliance of her generation and the ones after her.”

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

From day one, Surge tore down silos. We connected people and organizations that may not otherwise sit at the same table. This happened because of the connections the Surge experience sparked. This Convening serves a much bigger table, with many more seats, to bring together some of the greatest emerging minds and hearts in education. The real question is, why wouldn’t we be doing this?

WHY WILL IT WORK?

Because it already has! Our inaugural Convening in the spring of 2019 brought together a collective of alums from two cities and inspired that generation of leaders to move their work forward in powerful ways.

HOW TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN?

Invest in a powerful chapter in the story of American education. This is a sprawling movement of leaders of color with a groundswell of support calling for the kind of change these leaders will spark. This unifying moment is where we respond to that call. Help us make that moment a reality.
