“According to the dictionary, surge is “a sudden powerful forward or upward movement, especially by a crowd or by a natural force” — I decided to join this crowd because our students of color deserve a powerful upward movement. I could purchase new curriculum or paint the school gym, but our students deserve more. They deserve a seat at the table when curriculum is being drafted, they deserve policy that reimagines funding for state-of-the-art facilities. Our students deserve a Surge in upward opportunities. As a Surge fellow, I hope students of color never feel less-than.”
